DAY 1 - HILLSBORO: The Civic Center in Hillsboro, OR

To all my friends, family/relatives, acquaintances, neighbors, and kids' friends parents:  I will be embarking on a new adventure; please enjoy my new blog:  Washington County Real Estate Resource. Over at least the next year, I will be periodically posting things to do and see in Hillsboro, Oregon.

I will primarily highlight local events and fun activities.  In addition I will be sharing parks, libraries, bars/clubs/restaurants, hotels, local retailers, spas/beauty services and theatres to visit.  I would like to be your go-to community resource for those living in Washington County, Oregon and to those looking to relocate to Hillsboro, Oregon.

This blog is presented from the perspective of a virtually lifelong resident of Oregon who loves the county in which she lives.  Thank you so much for your support.

Day 1 of 365 ...

The Civic Center was built over three city blocks in the heart downtown Hillsboro. The complex has a total of 168,436 square feet. The complex has two plazas, with the North Plaza designed to create an outdoor amphitheater with seating for 700 with the buildings serving as a backdrop, and include using Main Street to accommodate crowds of 5,000 people.  South Plaza connects the government portions of the complex to the 120 unit residential component of the development to the south.  Both plazas have water features, including a welcoming fountain designed to be a gathering place for the community in the 24,000-square-foot  North Plaza.

On the ground floor is a Starbucks coffee shop in a 1,600-square-foot space, while the 20,000 square feet designed for the library branch remain open for future government use.  In the government areas there is a 3,800-square-foot conference center and the city council chambers.  This includes a 250 seat auditorium.  The Civic Center hosts the seasonal, weekly farmer’s market on Saturdays, and a marketplace on Tuesdays that features various vendors, both utilizing the center’s plaza area.  Plans call for an upscale restaurant in a 3,800-square-foot space.  City services at the site include the Administration Department, city planning, the office of the city recorder, and the municipal court among others. The Civic Center also houses the office of the mayor and is the site of the twice-monthly city council meetings.
The Civic Center incorporates environmentally friendly construction and design and has been awarded a gold LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) rating.
