DAY 7 - HILLSBORO: Pagan Jug Band at the McMenamins Rock Creek Tavern 5/29

Longtime Portland folk troubadours Chris "Zydeco Skeeter" Miskow and Pat Buckley have revived the band they originally founded back in 1993. The Pagan Jug Band's current incarnation features an all-acoustic lineup of banjo, dobro, accordion, blues harmonica, guitar, upright bass and percussion, deftly mixing straight-ahead bluegrass, folk and country blues, and Louisiana Zydeco. The material is drawn from a variety of classic country, folk and roots sources, along with a large body of original songs.

Some incarnation of the Pagan Jug Band has been around since 1993.  The band has evolved over the years, but the philosophy of the two founding members that still remain in the band (Chris Miskow & Patrick Buckley) has not changed at all:  play music that you love and you will be happy playing music!

The Pagan Jug Band plays around Portland at various local music spots and over the years has played at various local music festivals like Pickathon and the Oregon Country Fair.  Chances are if you see them playing around town they will have an old friend sitting in with them for a few songs here and there, or maybe just a fan from the audience who happened to bring an interesting instrument with them.  The Pagan Jug Band loves playing with new people and playing in new places.

L.L. Stub Stewart State Park Junior Rangers - "Where Does J.R. Beaver Live?"

Date:  Saturday, May 29, 2010
Time:  10:00 a.m.

The Junior Ranger program gives kids a chance to explore a state park.  By becoming a Junior Ranger, 6-12 year old visitors will get involved with plants, animals and park protection.  The Junior Ranger program is run at most state park campgrounds by park staff and hosts.

After young visitors enroll in the program, they receive a Junior Ranger Passport.  By completing activities, they receive passport stamps. When they fill their passport with stamps, the Junior Rangers receives awards. Activities include:

Discovering a Park "Secret"
Recycling Garbage
Attending a Park Program
Learning About the Environment
Finding and Identifying Three Special Plants or Animals
Keeping Your Part of the Park Clean

A passport is available at selected state parks from the Park Host or Park staff.

Aside from the deep, personal satisfaction every Junior Ranger feels after filling a passport page with stamps, there's the cool stuff that goes with it.

Each time Junior Rangers complete an activity, their passports will be stamped by a Park Host or other staff. When the first page has four stamps, the young visitor shows the passport to park staff person and receives:

The Junior Ranger Badge
The Secret Junior Ranger Greeting

On the next camping trip, the Junior Ranger can complete another activity page. On the third trip, the youth can finish the last activity page and show the finished passport to park staff to get:

The Junior Ranger Patch
A Special Certificate Signed by J.R. Beaver

Who's J.R. Beaver?  J.R. Beaver is the mascot of the Junior Ranger Program.  J.R. helps the children through their duties and delivers information about natural resources to them.

DAY 5 - BEAVERTON: CEDAR MILL GARDEN CLUB PLANT SALE 5/7 & 5/8

5 of 365 ...

The CEDAR MILL GARDEN CLUB is set to sell more than 1,000 plants at their 7TH ANNUAL SPRING PLANT SALE

Proceeds from this sale go toward local botanical gardens, Penny Pines Reforestation, the Oregon Garden, The John Quincy Adams Young House Foundation (for landscaping) and a scholarship for a student studying horticulture or related fields.

Date:  Friday May 7 and Saturday May 8, 2010

Time:  9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.

Place:  Historic John Quincy Adams Young House (Next to and parking allowed at the Cedar Mill Bible Church)

Address:  12050 NW Cornell Road, Beaverton, OR 97229

The annual plant sale is known for its large variety of quality perennials from members' yards.  They have "potting parties" at the chairman's home in the fall and early spring to insure that the plants are well rooted and will be ready to bloom for you the customers.

A perennial is a plant that comes up year after year.  Most lose their leaves and go dormant in the winter here in Oregon.  They need to be divided to thrive, thus the Garden Club has extra plants for the sale.

Bi-annual will also available, bi-annuals are plants that usually grow and bloom for a couple of years.  These are often self-seeders such as Foxglove.

The plant sale usually has a large number of herbs, succulents and native plants.  Iris, a favorite that grows from a tuber, will be available in many colors.

Sometimes the plant sale features some unusual vegetables, shrubs and vines. This year they will have a number of large clumps of 5 foot Vine Maples.

Most 3 gallon plants are $3.00, however some of the more unusual and choice plants, such as Astilbe, Fern and Hosta are a bit more.

DAY 4 BANKS / NORTH PLAINS: BANKS TRAIL CAFE

Day 4 of 365 ...

BANKS TRAIL CAFE (Sarah Longsine - Very Accomodating Owner!)

Serving - Espresso, Coffee, Food, Ice Cream ... and FREE WIFI.  What more could a girl ask for?  Banks Trail Cafe is a small town coffee shop/cafe.  It is my daughter, Reagan's, go to stop if she is in the mood for authentic shave ice with ice cream on the bottom and a multitude of flavor choices.

DAY 4 BEAVERTON - BEAVERTON BAKERY

Day 4 of 365 ...

I've never tasted a Beaverton Bakery cake I didn't like.  This is pretty much the only place my mother-in-law, Bev, trusts when purchasing birthday cakes for the family.  And the Beaverton Bakery cakes are always so pretty you almost don't want to eat them - but we always do!

Beaverton Bakery since 1925

Beaverton's first doctor, Francis Marion Robinson, graduated from Willamette University in 1885 with a degree in medicine, and started a practice in Beaverton.  In 1887, Dr. Robinson had a queen anne-style, victorian home built on Broadway.  In 1893, he had a pharmacy built next to his residence.  His house and pharmacy still stand today, as a functioning part of Beaverton Bakery's Old Town operation.

Over 80 Years of All Scratch Baking

In 1925 Charles Yeager combined and converted the Robinson house and pharmacy into Yeager’s Bakery.  Charles Schubert came to work at the bakery in 1952 and later purchased the business in 1965.

The Robinson Home is now listed on the national register of historic homes.  The 18.5 foot tall clock adorning the Robinson Home’s front lawn was placed by Mr. Schubert in 1983. It was originally constructed between 1912 and 1915 by Joseph Mayer of Seattle.

Mr. Schubert and his late wife Shirley expanded the bakery with the addition of a wedding shop. The theater to the west was acquired and converted into offices and production space.  In 2004 the City of Beaverton completed Bakery Plaza on the northeast corner of SW Hall and Broadway on land donated by Mr. Schubert.

The High Quality Tradition Continues

Today, Beaverton Bakery offers a full line of baked goods at its original Old Town Beaverton site.

Beaverton Bakery carries tons of items (cookies and petit fours to name a few) perfect for Mothers' Day on May 9th but you better call ahead to order:  (503) 646-7136
